THE MENAGERIE is a collection of textile creatures by Deptford-based artist Clara Kelly who specialises in hand embroidery and sculptural figures.

Clara’s fascination with textiles began in childhood, collecting fabric for colour, pattern, and texture. Her interest deepened at Bath Spa University where she graduated with a first in Textile Design for Fashion & Interiors.

Clara’s work draws heavily on her passion for world textiles, medieval art, and folklore. Her creations often take the form of abstract, anthropomorphic figures that echo prehistoric idols. Starting with wire or wooden skeletons, she layers paper or stuffing and then fabric to embellish with applique and embroidery. The resulting characters are playful yet rich in narrative, inviting viewers to imagine their stories and origins. Each piece invites viewers into a world where myths, fairy tales, and human history intertwine, offering a glimpse into the stories these characters might tell. Her sculptures embody a lifelong curiosity about how people imbue objects with meaning and magic.
