COLOUR RUSH was a exhibition featuring the artwork of Matthew Adẹ Medupin. The son of a farmer, Medupin was born in rural Nigeria and spent his early adulthood in Lagos before moving to the UK in the 80s. He picked up painting as a retirement hobby and is now a working artist. His work explores themes of belonging, emotion, space, place and home.
“I want my paintings to portray my journey in life which has taken me from the nooks and crannies of the most rural upbringing in the Yoruba speaking community of Ogidi, to life in the urban centres of Lagos and London… My work is deeply influenced by the interplay of these contrasting environments, and it is through this lens that I explore the tension and harmony between rurality and urbanity… I strive to highlight how these contradictions can be complementary through the use of colours to depict the energy and vibrancy of city life or the earthy tones to evoke the strength and dynamism associated with rural life. It is this balance that informs my work: the collision of these worlds, creating a dialogue of contrast yet cohesion.”
